The Volkswagen Transporter for trades, conversions and mobile businesses

The Transporter has been a benchmark medium van for decades. Fit-out crews, installers and mobile businesses buy it for the driving feel and the range of bodies and engines, and it is also the usual base for mobile workshop conversions. Strong demand for used examples has tended to keep prices firm, which lenders may take into account when they value the van.

Firm prices cut both ways. A Transporter costs more to buy than some rivals of the same age, so the balance to finance is higher, and a deposit can make the difference between a comfortable deal and a stretched one. A T6 with a full service record gives lenders more confidence than one with gaps in its history.

Name the generation and say whether it has been converted, because a T5.1 workshop van and a late T6.1 are assessed very differently. We will say what looks realistic before you apply in full. Finance is subject to status.

Transporter generations, sizes and checks

  • Generations: the T5 (2003 to 2009) and T5.1 (2010 to 2015), the T6 (2015 to 2019) and the T6.1 (2019 to 2024). The latest Transporter, on sale from 2025, is built by Ford alongside the Transit Custom and comes with a six-speed manual or a conventional eight-speed automatic rather than DSG. Later generations cost more and may be financed over longer terms.
  • Body styles: panel van, Kombi (crew) and Shuttle, in short and long wheelbases with standard and high roofs. A Kombi with rear seats can be treated as a car for some taxes, so check with your accountant.
  • Payload: up to roughly 1,200 kg on common panel vans.
  • Drivetrain: earlier T5s used 1.9 and 2.5 TDI engines, with 2.0 TDI diesels from the T5.1 onwards, manual or DSG automatic gearboxes on the later vans, and 4MOTION four-wheel drive on some. Ask for evidence that DSG servicing has been done.
  • Conversions: a Transporter converted into a campervan or motor caravan may no longer be a commercial vehicle for lending or tax. We arrange finance for business use only, so tell us about any conversion at the start.
  • What to check: a full service history, DSG gearbox behaviour, sliding door runners, the condition of any fitted racking, and signs of heavy use.

Transporter prices and a sample monthly payment

A used Volkswagen Transporter typically sells for about £8,000 to £30,000. Generation, mileage and trim set the price, and the strongest used values are usually for lower-mileage T6 and T6.1 vans. The older T5 vans at the bottom of the range tend to be below our lenders’ £10,000 minimum lend (excluding VAT, after deposit), which in practice means a van around £12,000 or more.

On a T6 at roughly £20,000 with £3,500 put down, you would be financing £16,500. Representative example: you borrow £16,500 for 48 months at 9.9% APR representative and pay £414.35 a month, which makes £19,888.80 payable in total, before any deposit and fees. Illustrative only and subject to status. A Transporter at your own price and deposit will give different figures, which the calculator will show.

VAT on a used Transporter

Firm Transporter prices make the VAT status matter more than usual. A van from a VAT-registered fleet or lessor often shows VAT on the invoice, while dealer stock taken in from private owners is commonly sold under the margin scheme, so nothing is reclaimable. Check before you commit, and see our VAT guide.

Funding a higher-value medium van

Hire purchase suits owners who plan to keep a Transporter for years, helped by its tendency to hold value. A finance lease or leasing can lower the monthly cost for firms that renew often. Higher values often benefit from a deposit, and our calculator shows how different deposits change the monthly figure. Leasing is only available on some used vans, so ask about the one you choose.

FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, on eligibility, credit checks and how the process works.

Do Transporters hold their value?
Demand for used examples has tended to be strong, which can help when a lender values the van. It also means a higher purchase price to fund, so you may need a larger deposit than for a cheaper rival.
Is the new Transporter the same as the Ford Transit Custom?
The latest Transporter, on sale from 2025, is built by Ford and based on the second-generation Transit Custom. Older Transporters are Volkswagen’s own design. Compare Transit Custom finance.
Can I finance a Transporter that has been converted to a camper?
That depends on the conversion. If it is registered as a motor caravan it may no longer count as a commercial vehicle, which can limit the lenders. We arrange finance for business use only, so a camper for leisure use is outside what we offer.
Is a T6.1 much easier to finance than a T5?
A newer, lower-mileage van generally has a wider choice of lenders, longer terms and lower payments for the same balance. A T5 is now at least eleven years old, so most sell for less than our lenders’ minimum or would be too old for many lenders by the end of the agreement. See older van finance.
