The Ford Ranger for site, farm and tow-heavy work

The Ranger is a pickup most often bought as a double cab: five seats, an open load bed and a reputation for coping with mud, trailers and rough tracks. Groundworkers, farmers, landscapers and site managers choose it because it carries tools and people together and tows plant or a trailer where many vans would struggle.

Towing is a real part of the appeal, with a braked towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes on many versions, so check the exact figure for the model in front of you. There are also two quite different Rangers on the used market: the T6 generation sold from 2012, and the all-new Ranger that arrived in 2023 and shares its underpinnings with the latest Volkswagen Amarok.

Double-cab pickups are now taxed differently from panel vans for some purposes, so tell us how the Ranger will be used, and whether it is a T6 or the newer generation. Our lenders need at least a year’s filed accounts, and a short enquiry shows what is realistic without a full application. Finance is subject to status.

Ranger body, payload and what to look for

  • Body: double cab is the usual used choice, with single-cab and super-cab versions less common. Many come with a hard top, roller shutter or load liner already fitted.
  • Payload: around one tonne on many versions, but trim and accessories reduce it, and some performance versions carry well under a tonne. Check the plate and the weight of any fitted extras.
  • Generations and trims: the T6 offered XL, XLT, Limited and Wildtrak trims, added the Raptor in 2019 and moved to the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel during its life. The current Ranger adds a V6 diesel, a plug-in hybrid and trims such as Tremor and Platinum.
  • What to check: signs of heavy towing, bed and tailgate damage, underbody and chassis rust, four-wheel-drive operation, the health of the diesel particulate filter and a complete service record.

Used Ranger prices and a worked example

A used Ford Ranger typically sells for around £12,000 to £38,000. Age, mileage, trim and generation make most of the difference, and a recent Wildtrak or Raptor will sit well above an older, higher-mileage XLT. The bottom of that band is right where our lenders’ £10,000 minimum lend (excluding VAT, after deposit) starts to bite, so the size of your deposit can matter here.

If you find a Ranger at about £22,000 and put £4,000 down, you would be financing £18,000. Representative example: £18,000 over 48 months at 9.9% APR representative works out at £452.02 a month, or £21,696.96 in total across the 48 payments (excluding deposit and fees). VAT and tax on a used Ranger

Tax on a used pickup is less straightforward than on a panel van. For VAT, HMRC generally treats a double-cab pickup with a payload of one tonne or more as a commercial vehicle. For benefit in kind and capital allowances, most double-cab pickups have been treated as cars since April 2025. Read our van vs pickup tax guide and confirm the position with your accountant before you buy.

Choosing a finance route for a pickup

Hire purchase is the usual route for a Ranger you plan to keep, especially if it will tow or work off-road. Contract hire can work if you prefer to change every few years, though it comes with a mileage allowance, which matters on a hard-working pickup. If you already own a Ranger, asset refinance can release cash from it. Leasing is only available on some used vans, so ask about the one you choose.

FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, on eligibility, credit checks and how the process works.

Is a Ford Ranger a van for tax purposes?
It depends on the cab, the tax in question and, for VAT, the payload. Since April 2025 most double-cab pickups are treated as cars for benefit in kind and capital allowances. Read our van vs pickup tax guide and check with your accountant before you buy.
Can I finance a Ranger Raptor through a limited company?
It can be considered, subject to status. The higher price means a larger balance and a bigger deposit, and its payload is well under a tonne, so its tax and VAT treatment should be checked with your accountant first.
Is the new Ranger the same as the Volkswagen Amarok?
The current Amarok is built by Ford on the Ranger’s underpinnings, with Volkswagen styling and interior. Older T6 Rangers are an entirely different generation, so check which you are pricing.
Does towing or off-road use affect finance?
Not directly, but it affects value and condition, which lenders consider. A Ranger with a full service history and a clean underside is easier to fund than one with signs of hard use. Tell us how it will be used when you enquire.
