Used Ford Transit Connect van finance for UK limited companies

The Ford Transit Connect for service work and urban rounds

The Transit Connect is the van many small firms graduate to from a car. It is compact enough for tight streets and multi-storey car parks, but it has a proper load area behind the seats, a bulkhead and a flat floor. Service engineers, mobile mechanics, couriers and cleaning firms use it because it is easy to get in and out of all day.

Two generations matter: the Ford-built second generation, sold from 2014, and the Volkswagen-built third generation. The Volkswagen-built Connect, which shares the Caddy’s underpinnings and engines, went on sale in the UK in 2024, so most 2022 and 2023 UK vans are still the Ford-built model. It is these newest vans that most often clear our lenders’ minimum.

Quote the year and the engine, because the Ford-built vans and the newer Volkswagen-built ones are priced and assessed differently. A short enquiry then shows which route looks workable. All finance is subject to status.

Transit Connect sizes, payload and checks

  • Body sizes: a short and a long wheelbase, the long one adding load length for pipes, shelving and larger stock. Load volume is about 2.9 and 3.6 cubic metres on the Ford-built van, and 3.1 and 3.7 on the newer Volkswagen-built one.
  • Payload: typically somewhere between 600 kg and 1,000 kg depending on the version, which is plenty for tools and parts but not for heavy materials.
  • Engines: second-generation vans use Ford diesels, moving to the 1.5 EcoBlue in later vans, while the newest vans use Volkswagen’s 2.0 diesel or a 1.5 petrol plug-in hybrid.
  • Crew versions: some Connects have a second row of seats. They can be classed differently from a plain panel van, so check the V5C and the body type before you buy.
  • What to check: service history, clutch wear on vans used for stop-start delivery, rust around the rear arches, and a clean diesel particulate filter on vans that rarely see a motorway.

Transit Connect prices and an example monthly cost

A used Transit Connect usually costs about £5,000 to £16,000, with age and mileage setting most of the price. The minimum lend of £10,000, excluding VAT and after deposit, means the van needs to cost around £12,000 or more. Most of the range sits below that, so in practice it is the later, higher-priced vans that qualify.

For a late, low-mileage Connect at the top of its range, around £15,250, with £2,500 down, you would finance £12,750. Representative example: you borrow £12,750 for 48 months at 9.9% APR representative and pay £320.18 a month, which makes £15,368.64 payable in total, before any deposit and fees. Illustrative only and subject to status. A Transit Connect at your own price and deposit will give different figures, which the calculator will show.

VAT on a used Transit Connect

Whether VAT can be reclaimed depends on who sold the van and how. A Connect from a leasing company or fleet may carry VAT, a private sale carries none, and a dealer’s margin-scheme van shows nothing to reclaim. If you are VAT-registered it changes what the van really costs you, so read how to tell the difference.

Matching the agreement to the van

Hire purchase is the simplest route on a Connect, and it leaves you owning the van at the end. A finance lease may suit a VAT-registered company that wants lower rentals. If a courier or service contract funds the van, a term matched to the length of that contract keeps the commitment sensible.

FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, on eligibility, credit checks and how the process works.

Can a sole trader finance a Transit Connect?
Sole traders face a much higher minimum lend than limited companies, set out in our eligibility criteria, and a used Connect will not reach it. A limited company can qualify, but only once it has at least a year’s filed accounts, so forming a new company would not help in the short term.
Is the new Transit Connect the same as the Volkswagen Caddy?
The Connect sold in the UK since 2024 is made by Volkswagen alongside the Caddy and shares its underpinnings, while older Connects are Ford’s own design. Compare the Caddy before you decide.
Should I get the short or long wheelbase Connect?
Pick by what you carry most days. The short wheelbase is easier to park, while the long one gives extra load length for pipes, ladders or bigger deliveries. It usually costs a little more to buy, and so to finance.
Is the Transit Connect good for courier work?
Its size and running costs suit multi-drop and last-mile work. Lenders mainly look at the company, its accounts and the van, though some also consider the type of work, and a courier with a contract usually has more to show. See our courier van finance page.
