The Ford Transit for heavy, bulky and high-volume loads
If a business needs a large van, the Transit is usually the first one on the shortlist. It has been on British roads in huge numbers for decades, and that matters for finance as much as for driving: there are used examples at almost every age and price, and parts are easy to find. Builders, removals firms, parcel carriers and scaffolders lean on it, and so do the companies that build tippers, dropsides and Luton bodies on its chassis.
That supply helps you as a buyer, but no two used Transits are alike. A tidy ex-fleet panel van and a worked-hard ex-rental one can sit side by side at very different prices, and lenders are likely to value them differently too. Given our lenders’ minimum lend, you will usually be looking at the Mk8 Transit sold from 2014 rather than the older Mk7, and an electric E-Transit has also been on sale since 2022.
A short enquiry starts with the van: its age, mileage, body and weight class. Have the registration and the body type to hand when you apply, and mention any conversion. Finance is subject to status.
Transit sizes, weights and what to inspect
- Body sizes: several wheelbase lengths and three roof heights (low, medium and high). Check the length and height against what you carry, and against any depot or car park barrier you use.
- Weights: gross weights run from below 3.5 tonnes to about 4.7 tonnes on the heaviest chassis. On a typical 3.5 tonne panel van the payload is usually somewhere between about 1,000 and 1,400 kg, and the figure on the plate is the one that counts.
- Generations: the Mk8 (from 2014) is the main used buy, with a 2.2-litre diesel at first and the 2.0 EcoBlue in later vans. The older Mk7 is cheaper but less likely to clear our lenders’ minimum.
- Emissions: if you drive into London or another Clean Air Zone, check the exact van on the official vehicle checker. Diesel vans generally need to meet Euro 6, which on a Transit usually points to a later, EcoBlue-engined van.
- Driveline: front-wheel drive is typical on panel vans, while rear-wheel drive is common on heavier chassis and conversions.
- What to check: a full service history, clutch and rear suspension wear, floor and bulkhead damage on ex-hire vans, and the diesel particulate filter on vans that mostly do short urban runs.
What a used Transit costs and what it means monthly
Used Transits typically sell for around £9,000 to £28,000. Age, mileage and body type drive most of that spread, and a tipper or Luton conversion can sit outside the usual panel van range. Our lenders will not fund less than £10,000 (excluding VAT, after your deposit), so the van itself needs to cost around £12,000 or more. That puts the older Mk7 vans at the cheap end of the band out of reach.
Take a Mk8 Transit priced at around £17,500 with £2,500 paid up front, which leaves £15,000 to finance. Representative example: borrow £15,000 over 48 months at 9.9% APR representative. 48 monthly payments of £376.68, total payable £18,080.64 (excluding deposit and fees). Illustrative only and subject to status. You can swap in your own Transit figures using the van finance calculator.
VAT on a used Transit
Rental firms, lease companies and fleets sell on plenty of Transits, and a van from a VAT-registered seller often shows VAT on the invoice that a VAT-registered buyer can reclaim for business use. A dealer can instead use the optional margin scheme, which shows no VAT. Ask which applies, and see our guide to VAT on used vans if you are unsure.
Which finance route suits a Transit
Hire purchase suits firms that plan to keep a Transit for years, run it hard or convert it, because you own the van at the end. A finance lease can lower the payments, with VAT charged on the rentals rather than all at once, while business van leasing suits those who like to hand a van back and change it. If you already own a Transit outright, asset refinance can release cash from it. Your accountant should confirm which route fits your tax position. Leasing is only available on some used vans, so ask about the one you choose.
