The Mercedes-Benz Citan for customer-facing small businesses

The Citan is a small van with a premium badge, aimed at firms whose vehicle is seen by customers every day. Florists, pharmacies, service engineers and mobile sales teams choose it for a neat, well-finished cab and a load area that still copes with a day’s stock or tools. Underneath, it is based on a small Renault van, so many mechanical parts are widely available.

There are two generations. The first, sold from 2013, is based on the Renault Kangoo of its day, while the second, sold from 2022, is based on the newer Kangoo and shares underpinnings with the Nissan Townstar. The later vans are also the ones most likely to be priced high enough to clear our lenders’ minimum.

Citan sizes, payload and checks

• Body sizes: the second generation offers about 2.9 cubic metres in standard form, with a longer version added later. First-generation vans came in three lengths with roughly 2.4 to 3.8 cubic metres.
• Payload: up to roughly 800 kg, ample for parts and stock but light for heavy materials.
• Engines: small diesels dominate used examples, with petrol versions and an electric eCitan also available. Match the fuel to your mileage.
• What to check: service history, clutch and gearbox, interior wear from daily customer use, and any dents from tight urban parking.

Citan prices and a sample monthly payment

A used Mercedes-Benz Citan typically costs around £5,000 to £18,000, with first-generation vans at the lower end and late, low-mileage second-generation vans at the top. Our lenders’ minimum lend of £10,000 (excluding VAT, after deposit) points to a van costing around £12,000 or more, and most first-generation Citans are cheaper than that.

A recent, low-mileage Citan at about £17,000 with £2,750 down would mean borrowing £14,250. VAT on a used Citan

Even on a small premium van the VAT can run to thousands of pounds. A Citan sold by a VAT-registered fleet or leasing company is likelier to carry reclaimable VAT than one bought privately or from a margin-scheme dealer, so get the status in writing and let your accountant confirm what you can reclaim. Finance options for a small premium van

Hire purchase suits a Citan you will keep for years. If you replace vehicles every few years, a finance lease or leasing keeps the cost steady. Whichever you choose, a recent, higher-priced Citan is the realistic starting point, given the minimum lend our lenders work to. Leasing is only available on some used vans, so ask about the one you choose.
