The Volkswagen Caddy for gas engineers, locksmiths and service rounds
The Caddy is the small van that drives like a car. Gas engineers, locksmiths, alarm fitters, mobile valeters and other service trades pick it because it is comfortable over a long working day and small enough to park outside the job. The load area is not huge, but it is tidy and well shaped for tools and parts.
There are two body lengths, the standard Caddy Cargo and the longer Caddy Maxi, and the choice changes the price as well as the space. The Maxi costs a little more but carries longer items, so think about your typical day before you pay for length you will not use. The newer Mk5 also underpins the latest Ford Transit Connect, which Volkswagen builds alongside it.
Say whether you are looking at a Cargo or a Maxi, a Mk4 or a Mk5, and whether it has a DSG gearbox. That lets us say what looks workable before a full application. Finance is subject to status.
Caddy sizes, generations and checks
- Body sizes: Cargo and Maxi. The Mk4 offers roughly 3.2 and 4.2 cubic metres, and the Mk5 roughly 3.1 and 3.7.
- Payload: up to roughly 800 kg, enough for a day’s tools and parts.
- Generations: the Mk4 (2015 to 2020) is the common used buy, with the Mk5, sold from 2021, on a more modern platform and with a larger set of driver assistance features.
- Engines and gearboxes: mostly 2.0 TDI diesels in several outputs, with petrol options too, and manual or DSG automatic gearboxes. If the van has a DSG, ask about servicing.
- What to check: service history, the diesel particulate filter on vans doing short runs, tyre and brake wear on heavily loaded service vans, and the sliding door and tailgate.
Caddy prices and a monthly payment example
A used Volkswagen Caddy typically sells for about £5,000 to £20,000, with Maxi versions, DSG automatics and newer Mk5 vans costing more. The minimum lend is £10,000 excluding VAT and after deposit, so the van needs to cost around £12,000 or more. Many Caddies are cheaper than that, so a newer van is usually needed.
Suppose a newer Caddy is on sale at around £17,750 and you put £3,000 down, leaving £14,750 to borrow. Representative example: £14,750 over 48 months at 9.9% APR representative works out at £370.41 a month, or £17,779.68 in total across the 48 payments (excluding deposit and fees). VAT on a used Caddy
Plenty of Caddies pass through fleets and trades, so many used vans show VAT on the invoice. Others, taken in from private owners by dealers, are commonly sold under the margin scheme with no VAT you can reclaim. If you are VAT-registered, check which applies first, using our VAT guide.
Matching the agreement to a service van
A hire purchase agreement of three or four years suits a Caddy you plan to keep. If you run a small fleet of service vans, a lease can simplify renewals. A larger deposit can lower the monthly cost, though the minimum lend is measured after it.
