The Renault Master for heavy loads, bodies and long hauls

The Master is Renault’s large van, used for everything from removals and parcel delivery to Luton, box and tipper conversions. Builders’ merchants, converters and delivery contractors use it for a spacious load area and a wide range of bodies.

A choice that matters when buying a used Master is the drive layout. Front-wheel-drive vans have a lower load floor, which makes loading easier, while rear-wheel-drive versions suit heavy loads, bodies and towing. Think about how you will use the van before you choose, because it changes the price, and therefore how much you need to borrow.

Tell us the length, the drive layout and any body fitted, and whether it is a third-generation van or the newer fourth. We will say what looks realistic. Finance is subject to status.

Master sizes, drive and checks

  • Body sizes: from about 8 cubic metres on the shortest, lowest third-generation van to well over 15 on the longest high-roof versions.
  • Weights and payload: up to roughly 1,500 kg on a common 3.5 tonne panel van, falling to around a tonne once a Luton or tail-lift body is fitted. Heavier chassis cabs exist, and above 3.5 tonnes the licence rules change.
  • Drive: front-wheel drive for a lower load floor, or rear-wheel drive, often with twin rear wheels, for heavier work.
  • Generations: the third-generation Master from 2010, updated in 2014 and 2019, and an all-new fourth generation from 2024. Electric versions were sold in both, but most used Masters at prices we can fund are third-generation diesels.
  • What to check: the engine and AdBlue systems, corrosion on the cab and floor, and wear on the load area.

Master prices and an example monthly payment

A used Renault Master typically sells for about £7,000 to £27,000, depending on age, mileage and body, with Luton and box conversions towards the upper end. With a £10,000 minimum lend (excluding VAT, after deposit), the oldest, cheapest Masters costing under around £12,000 fall outside what our lenders will fund.

For a Master at roughly £18,000 with £3,000 put down, you would finance £15,000. Representative example: borrow £15,000 over 60 months at 9.9% APR representative and the 60 monthly payments come to £314.86, with £18,891.60 payable in total (excluding deposit and fees). Illustrative only and subject to status. Use the calculator for your own Master figures.

VAT on a used Master

Masters often come from rental firms, fleets and parcel contractors, and the invoice shows whether VAT applies. A van a dealer bought without VAT may be sold under the margin scheme, with nothing to reclaim. Crew cabs, minibuses and camper conversions can be treated differently from panel vans for VAT, so ask your accountant before you buy one. See our VAT guide.

Choosing an agreement for a Master

Hire purchase suits a Master you will keep and work hard, with no mileage limits on a standard agreement. A finance lease can lower payments for a VAT-registered firm. If the van will carry a Luton or box body, tell us at the start. See Luton van finance for how that works.

FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, on eligibility, credit checks and how the process works.

Should I choose a front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive Master?
Front-wheel drive gives a lower load floor and is usually fine for ordinary loads. Rear-wheel drive suits heavier loads, bodies and towing. Choose by the loads and bodies you will carry, as rear-wheel-drive vans and those with twin rear wheels often cost more.
Is the Master the same as the Vauxhall Movano and Nissan NV400?
The Movano built from 2010 to 2021 and the Nissan NV400, later renamed Interstar, are based on the Master. The Movano from 2021 is a different van, related to the Fiat Ducato. See Movano finance.
Is the new fourth-generation Master worth waiting for?
Used examples of the 2024 van cost more than third-generation vans, and many will sit above the price band shown here. Compare the monthly cost across generations with the calculator before you decide.
Can I finance a Master with a tipper or Luton body?
Possibly, subject to status, if the body is professionally built. Payload drops once a body is fitted, so check it. See tipper van finance.
