The Nissan Primastar for fleets and firms that prefer a Nissan dealer

The Primastar is Nissan’s medium van and a close twin of the Renault Trafic. It is used by engineers, couriers and fleets who want a Nissan dealer network, and it covers a wide range of bodies.

The name has a history worth knowing. The first Primastar ran until 2014, the same type of van was then sold as the NV300 from 2016 to 2021, and the Primastar name returned from 2022. The NV300 and the current Primastar are essentially the same van, with a new front end, cab and name from 2022, so a late NV300 can be a cheaper route to the same design. The first Primastar is much older and a different van.

Primastars can be harder to find than Trafics, so compare both. Quote the year and badge when you enquire, as the 2022 update changed the cab and front end. Finance is subject to status.

Primastar sizes, payload and checks

• Body sizes: short and long versions, including a long high-roof van, with load volumes of roughly 5.2 to 8.6 cubic metres.
• Payload: up to roughly 1,200 kg.
• Generations: the first Primastar, the NV300 and the current Primastar. Check the V5C and badge to confirm which you have.
• Engines: Renault-sourced diesels, with a dual-clutch automatic on the more powerful recent versions. Nissan does not currently sell an electric Primastar in the UK. Its electric vans are the Townstar EV and the Interstar-e.
• What to check: engine condition on higher-mileage vans, the diesel particulate filter, and wear on the load floor and sliding doors.

Primastar prices and a sample monthly payment

A used Nissan Primastar typically sells for around £7,000 to £24,000, with NV300 and older vans lower and recent Primastars at the top. The minimum lend is £10,000 excluding VAT and after deposit, so a van costing around £12,000 or more is needed, and older vans at the bottom of the range fall short.

On a late NV300 or early current Primastar at about £15,000 with £2,000 put down, the amount to finance is £13,000. VAT on a used Primastar

Primastars from fleets and rental firms often show VAT on the invoice, while a van sold under a dealer’s margin scheme shows no VAT at all. Check before you agree a price, and ask your accountant about crew versions. See our VAT guide.
