The Ford Transit Courier for compact, low-running-cost work
The Transit Courier is the smallest van in Ford’s range, a small van built on a car platform. It is easy to park, light on fuel and simple to drive, which suits firms that need a van to look after tools or stock without costing much to run, such as sales reps, small delivery operators and mobile service trades.
Its small size is also its limit. The first generation (2014 to 2023) is best for parcels, tools, samples and kit rather than building materials, while the larger second generation that followed has more room. It is a lower-value van, which matters for finance, because many Couriers sell for less than our lenders’ minimum lend.
Be ready to say which generation you are pricing and what it costs, because that decides whether the lend clears the minimum. A quick enquiry then shows what is realistic before you apply in full. Finance is subject to status.
Transit Courier size, engines and what to look for
- Size: about 2.3 cubic metres of load space on the first generation and roughly 2.9 on the second, so check which you are looking at, because the second generation takes noticeably more.
- Payload: roughly 600 kg on the first generation and around 680 kg on most second-generation vans, so weigh your regular load before you commit.
- Engines: a small diesel for higher mileage, or a 1.0-litre turbo petrol for shorter local runs. Match the fuel to your real mileage rather than the headline economy figure. An electric version has also been introduced.
- What to check: service history, the rear load floor and bulkhead, clutch wear on stop-start work, and evidence of regular oil changes, particularly on the petrol.
Transit Courier prices and a monthly cost example
A used Transit Courier typically sells for about £5,000 to £15,000, depending on age, mileage and fuel, with later, lower-mileage vans at the upper end. The minimum lend is £10,000 net of VAT and after deposit, so the van needs to cost around £12,000 or more. Most Couriers are cheaper than that, and only the newest, highest-priced ones clear it.
A late, low-mileage Courier priced at the top of its range, around £15,000, with £2,000 down leaves £13,000 to finance over three years. Representative example: borrow £13,000 over 36 months at 9.9% APR representative and the 36 monthly payments come to £416.29, with £14,986.44 payable in total (excluding deposit and fees). VAT on a used Transit Courier
A Courier bought privately, or from a dealer using the margin scheme, has no VAT to reclaim. Ex-fleet examples from VAT-registered firms are more likely to show VAT. Check the invoice and the seller’s VAT status before you commit. Our VAT guide explains how to tell.
Making the numbers work on a compact van
A straightforward hire purchase agreement over three or four years keeps things simple and leaves you owning the van. Because the lend has to clear our lenders’ minimum, the van you choose and your deposit decide whether the numbers work, so check both before you enquire. See hire purchase and our eligibility criteria.
