Van vs Pickup vs Crew Van — Tax & VAT
Whether a vehicle counts as a “van” or a “car” for tax changes what you can claim and any benefit-in-kind. With pickups in particular, a recent change makes this worth checking before you buy.

Why classification matters
Vans (commercial vehicles) generally get better treatment than cars: full VAT recovery where qualifying, capital allowances/AIA, and no significant benefit-in-kind for business use. Cars are more restricted. So whether HMRC sees your vehicle as a van or a car really matters.
Pickups: a recent change
Double-cab pickups have long been treated as vans where payload is one tonne or more — but the treatment of double-cab pickups changed recently for some tax purposes. Don’t assume the old rule still applies: check the position in force when you buy, and confirm with your accountant.
Crew vans
A crew van (second row of seats in a van body) usually keeps commercial-vehicle treatment, but payload and use can affect it. As ever, the detail decides — get it confirmed before you commit.
